Although it was true a person could not choose whom they fell in love with, they did have the decision of choosing the person they wanted to be with. Whether they were in love or not. It wasn’t a dilemma for Gemma, even with a dreaded prophecy hanging over her head. She fell in love with Leif Villers and wanted to be with him.

Gemma took some time to collect herself, then stood up and brushed herself off. Taking several deep breaths, she whispered a calming spell under her breath, but still walked with a pounding and excited heart as she went looking for Mr. Villers again. He was not in the place she had last spoken with him, so she meandered through the orchard, hoping to happen upon him pruning elsewhere. She felt as if she had searched the entire orchard before she finally saw his tall dark form walking toward her.

His blue eyes lit when he caught sight of her again and his smile was generous. She could not help but wonder if it was reserved just for her.

“Miss MacLugh,” he said when they were mere feet away. He carried a pair of sheers. “Have you been wandering the orchard all these hours?”

She nodded, then ducked her head, feeling the flush rise in her cheeks. “I had much to think about. Where were you?”

“The new boarders arrived. I was assisting with their trunks and luggage.”

Gemma nodded. The changers. She would need to procure an introduction and ascertain whether they would create an issue for Camilla. Perhaps they did not intend to stay long.

“More about the girl you spoke of?” he asked, concern lacing his tone again.

Gemma met his eyes and shook her head slightly. “No.”

Mr. Villers stepped slowly forward but kept a respectable distance. He crossed his arms, taking an unconscious defensive stance.

“I thought about you, actually,” she said, keeping her head slightly bowed as she looked up at him.

Mr. Villers cleared his throat and unfolded his arms to place them on his hips after dropping the pruning sheers into the dirt. He opened his mouth to speak, but did not say anything.

Gemma smiled. “I must explain,” she said. “When I showed you what I am… at the river—”

“I thought it was the most magnificent, most beautiful thing I’d ever seen!” he interjected.

Gemma’s smile widened, then quickly faded as she carefully chose her words. “You have no idea how much that meant to me, that you are so accepting of what I am.”

“Did you think I would reject you if I knew?” he asked. “Is that why…” his voice caught and he cleared his throat again. “Is that why you have not given me an answer when I declared myself to you?”

Gemma nodded. “Yes, that is part of it,” she admitted. But it wasn’t the entire truth. She suspected she was on the pathway to falling in love with Mr. Villers that day, but the tipping point had only happened that morning. She wondered if she should mention it
